MOVING TIPS AND ADVICE

Tips to ease your moving experience

What to Do Before Start Packing

Let's prepare by comparing your available current square footage vs the new home square footage. This will help you decide if you can take everything or might need to get rid off some items.

Survey your belongings.

This will help you determine the amount of material you will need to purchase. Purchase materials.
During this stage, is better to have extra than to be short of boxes or packing materials.

Declutter & Clean Your Home

If you think the new place will be smaller and don’t have storage, get rid of some items that are of less value and easier to buy in the future if needed. Example. You might be moving to a smaller condo that houses a house club with Gym, you might sell the treadmill, weights, etc.

Take Pictures of Your most valuable Items.

It is recommended that you have before moving pictures in case of a claim, or it might help you remember where or how a painting was hung up in the move from location.

What to Do During Packing

Use the Right Boxes for The Right Stuff

Heavy items are best in smaller boxes, so they are easier to lift and carry.  Lighter items are best in larger boxes so you can move more around at once. A bulkier or more awkward box is always easier to carry if lighter objects are inside. Create a packing plan instead of throwing things into boxes.

Pay special attention to Fragile Items.

It’s important to wrap fragile items like electronics, glass, art, and other valuables. If you have the original box that items came in, it’s the ideal way to move them. Or wrap breakables well in bubble wrap, paper towels, quilts or blankets. Fragile items like dishes are best packed vertically.

Pack by Room and Label.

It is better to label rooms and pack all items in that room in order so it its easier to unload in the drop-off location.  Example:  Room 1, Room 2, Living Room, garage, kitchen, etc are helpful labels you can use.

Keep Your Special Document Organized.

Creating a dedicated folder for your moving paperwork keeps you organized. Putting reservations, checklists and receipts will prevent anything from getting lost. Also, It is important that you super protect or even make copies and keep them in a safe place: deeds, passports, wills, or any other items that you might want to carry and avoid any other movers from handling them.

Select A Date

If your move-in date is flexible, choose a day that works best for you and anybody who might be helping. If you need help from family and friends, let them know in advance. If you’re hiring a moving company, weekday rates tend to be less expensive.

Change Your Address

Changing your address, a little bit before you move can help you avoid issues. This prevents mail, packages, and bills from going to your old address for a while after you move.

Set Up Utilities

Setting up utilities, Wi-Fi, and other amenities before the move to your new location will ensure you’re well prepared from day one in your new place. Also, be sure to set a stop service day for any utilities at your old place so you’re not paying for services in a place you no longer live.

Pack a First Night Box

Pack an overnight bag with clothes, toiletries, and anything else you’d like to access on your first night at your new place. Games, movies, and disposable dining ware are also fun options. This eliminates having to go through different boxes after you’ve been moving all day.

Set Aside Cleaning Supplies

Keep a box of cleaning supplies separate so you can clean your old place if needed. You’ll also have everything ready to clean your new place before you move everything in.

Stop Buying Groceries

It’s best to stop buying groceries about a week before you move so you’re not wasting a lot of food. Depending on how far you move, some food is easy to transport, but other food can be thrown out or donated to a local food pantry.
